I could buy a big white block of sand and put it in a desert, but the desert would be gone and I would have no sand to look at in the first place.

It’s more like a pile of sand, with no top and no bottom. It’s the same as if you were to fill up a swimming pool with water and then add some sand to it.
Sand dunes are simply piles of sand on top of another beach. I have no idea what a sand dune is.
